OVERVIEW

Things to do in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States and one of the world’s greatest capital cities. It offers visitors exceptional museums (nearly all free), tree-shaded parks, outstanding restaurants and nightlife that seems to get better every year. It is alive with a special rhythm all its own – it blends a high-powered political climate with an ever-changing population of new talent and imagination. It is a city of noble beauty, white and majestic in marble and granite, yet modern and gentle at the same time. Tall, stately trees and gardens of glorious color, handsome monuments and museums, graceful architecture, the tree-lined National Mall, flowers bordering the meandering Potomac and imposing government buildings blend to create a panorama that is spectacular to behold.

The city was founded on July 16, 1790, and was planned by French-born engineer Pierre Charles L’Enfant. By law, no building can be higher than the Washington Monument, and this restriction, coupled with the city’s 8,000 acres of parkland, gives Washington, D.C. a special beauty and openness. The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are located in the district. The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Development Bank, as well as many other national and international institutions, including trade unions and professional associations, have headquarters in Washington.

Metro-Washington’s population now stands at more than 5.3 million people. Few places in the world have a larger mix of international cultures. Despite the area’s growth, Washington doesn’t have the sprawling metropolitan feel of other large cities. The city is alive with beautiful parks, colorful neighborhoods and outdoor cafés that invite visitors to explore while soaking up sunshine and history in one spectacular place.
