At the start of the year, many people set New Year’s resolutions, and I’ll bet that the top 10 New Year’s resolutions include goals such as “lose 10 pounds” or “get to the gym more.” This year, I did see a lot of people who have added “do more volunteering” to their list. It’s on the top of mine.
It seems as though every day gets shorter, and we are more scheduled than ever, but one thing I have found that keeps my life in perspective is taking time out to do something and impact someone else’s life – with a group, my family or myself.
One of my goals and resolutions this month is to give back and find great volunteer activities at least once a month. This month I am working with the Ronald McDonald House and the Humane Society. I will keep you posted as to how the events go and who are some people I meet that are MAKING A DIFFERENCE in peoples’ lives.
Often overlooked is the fact that there are many ways while on your meeting, incentive or recognition programs to give back. Yes, it’s true. Check with your DMC to see what types of “give back” programs they have done for the community or country you will be in, or local charities who are in need. I have used a company called Impact4good http://www.impact4good.com/ and they are an amazing organization that can tailor a program just for your group and its interests. Oftentimes these types of philanthropic events can be tax deductible too.
On a more personal note, there are many ways to get your entire family involved – have you ever thought of taking family volunteer vacations? There are many organizations out there and I would recommend doing your research prior to signing up, but two that I am familiar with are www.globalvolunteers.org and www.crossculturalsolutions.com – check them out.
We have everyone in the family pick what their cause will be and support each other in our efforts (separate from volunteering trips). If you need help picking, here are a few sights that might help you choose:
