One of the things I like to do when I go to Las Vegas is treat myself to a show! Some people love it and some hate to think they are missing casino time to sit and watch another Cirque show – but I LOVE IT!
I often sit and wonder how the interview process goes for one of these shows – I can swing from very high things and not fall, I am very flexible, I can dance and I am not afraid to try crazy things … I mean, really – these acrobat dancers are amazing!
So while staying at the Aria in Las Vegas, I wanted to see the new Viva Elvis Cirque du Soleil show. I love Elvis and I could not wait to see how the Cirque people would interpret his life and music. The day of the Viva Elvis show I went to the “official” Elvis store and shopped around – bought a few shirts and enjoyed people-watching and seeing his fans reminiscing and taking pictures by one of his sparkle outfits and a huge bust of Elvis’ head and shoulders. The energy was great in Vegas and I could not wait to see the show. I did, however, find it weird that a few people tried to talk me out of seeing the Elvis show and told me to see the Beatles Love show instead. But I was dead-set on seeing Elvis and although I knew it was a preview show, meaning it’s not “officially” launched and they were still making tweaks – it was Elvis and Cirque – it was going to be awesome!
WRONG! The Viva Elvis show started out with a BANG – the music was way too loud and it was more of a singing and dancing montage than Cirque-like. There were three or four Cirque scenes and the rest was singing and dancing acts that just seemed disjointed – and some were just flat-out weird.
My favorite part of the entire Viva Elvis Cirque du Soleil production and what I thought the entire 90 minutes was going to be was two Cirque scenes: one was a comic book scene with super heroes doing amazing tricks, and the other was an entire scene they did around Elvis going to the army – the actors and acrobats were fantastic! I sat in awe wondering how they were doing all those tricks and not running into each other! Next time I will heed the warning of my friends in Vegas and see the shows they are recommending; not the one still working the bugs out.

I love Las Vegas, but have not been to one of the Cirque du Soleil shows. My husband wants to go out in the Fall, so I appreciate your letting us know that this is not a show that we spend our money on yet.
What would you recommend as the show to see with it being our first show?
