  1. The Uffizi. Formerly the head “office” of the Italian state, the Uffizi houses all the Renaissance paintings you can handle, including one of my personal favorites, The Birth of Venus by Botticelli. (I have the print hanging in my bedroom.)
  2. The Bargello. A smaller museum filled with sculptures from the master. My personal favorite is Michelangelo’s Bacchus, the god of wine, of course!

On this particular day it was off to Muckross Farms for a tour and look around a few farms still practicing farming in the traditional way before the advent of electricity when all work was done by country people, their animals and very manual farm machinery.

I knew when I booked a trip to Ireland that it would be a whirlwind but my time was tight and I had a great opportunity so I took it …

The next day it was off to Killarney via train. The train was easily attainable, inexpensive and a great way to get from one place to another without having to rent a car. It was a 3-hour train ride to Marrow and was wonderful to see the scenery and the hundreds of farms go buy. Once in Killarney I went over to the Hotel Europe for lunch and to see their new renovation. The lobby, meeting space and spa facilities are outstanding.

I took the opportunity to visit some of Dublin’s great venues – Kilmainham, Dublin Castle and No 10 Ormond Quay.

Rouen, the capital of Normandy, is about 1.5 hours from my hotel. It was rainy so I was glad our first stop was the art museum, Musee des Beaux Art. What a cool museum! When we walked in one of those live statues kind of creeped me out but it was really cool. Lunch was served in the main entrance foyer. A beautiful room – all marble with skylights to let the natural light in and huge scenic paintings on every wall.

Honfleur is an incredibly cool town! Our bus pulled into the heart of the town, overlooking the dock filled with sail boats and surrounded by tall town houses. The air was crisp and fresh; I was there midmorning but felt it like sunrise or sunset because of the overcast clouds and the sun trying to poke through. The lighting of the town is very unique; I later learned the lighting is a key part of the town’s ambience, attracting artists of all kinds.

Back to international travel … and flying to FRANCE! I was really looking forward to this trip. I flew business-class direct from Washington, DC – so what’s not to look forward to? (Other than no sleep.)  Air France’s business-class is amazing – it will definitely be hard to go back to economy-class after that flight. Shortly after we were airborne I surfed the in-flight TV movies; many were not yet even on DVD! Two movies, dinner and a short nap and we were in Paris!

To escape from the hustle and bustle of Dublin, my favorite place is Glendalough, or “The Glen Between Two Lakes.” I started my day visiting a graveyard and several old monuments from the 12th and 13th century.
