OVERVIEW
Things to do in St. Martin St. Maarten
A lively blend of Caribbean bliss and French sophistication, St. Martin is a delightful tropical treasure where the sun beams perpetually in a radiant blue sky and pleasure and tranquility abound. Half-French, half-Dutch, the island of St. Martin/St. Maarten is considered the smallest inhabited territory in the world shared by two sovereign states, with a total land area of 37 square miles (21 French, 16 Dutch). Shared peacefully by both parties for three centuries, St. Martin is the name of the French-governed portion of the island, while St. Maarten designates the Dutch side. Although only a small welcome sign on the road indicates that travelers have passed from one side to the other, the contrasts are distinctive and clearly marked.
There is an abundance of wonderful sights to behold and locations to explore in and around St. Martin. Although the island’s tourism industry is one of the most developed in the Caribbean, its rich heritage, history and cultural life remain preserved. Various attractions include historic sites, art galleries and an annual carnival, as well as a beautiful array of white-sand beaches, each with its own unique appeal. Guests may visit Fort St. Louis or spend a day in Marigot, the small and chic capital city – a kind of St. Tropez of the Caribbean – lined with shops, bistros and charming cafés that are among the best in the Caribbean. Whether their days are spent lounging in the sand on the Caribbean shore or experiencing the local culture, guests are sure to uncover loads of enjoyable activities and exciting adventures to gratify their senses in St. Martin!

As my Caribbean adventure continues … I gain another stamp in my passport! The first time I went to St. Barts was via a cigarette boat one afternoon while I was staying in St. Martin. This was one small, fast boat. I’ve always thought of St. Barts as a playground to the rich and the famous, a place where they take their yachts and sail around all day. Well, there were several huge yachts there, trust me on that!
