Things to do in St. Lucia

Of volcanic origin, St. Lucia was probably first visited by the Europeans about 1500. St. Lucia is an independent island state, one of the Windward Islands located in the southeastern Caribbean Sea, between Martinique on the north and Saint Vincent on the south. It has an area of 238 square miles. St. Lucia has a total population of 164,213. The capital and largest city is Castries, and also serves as the principal port with an excellent harbor.

The island was the first successful colony established during the mid-17th century by the French. England and France exchanged governments 14 times before it was finally ceded to the British in 1814. In 1967, St. Lucia became a member of the West Indies Associated States with full internal self-government.

From an environmental perspective, there has been a reduction in the amount of forest and wooded land; the island is working to protect the undisturbed island homes of an endangered lizard and grass snake, two species found only in St. Lucia. The economy of St. Lucia is largely dependent on agriculture. Bananas are the most important crop and principal export; other products include coconuts and mangoes. About 129,900 metric tons of fruit are harvested yearly. Tourism is very important. Served by two airports, the island has a good network of 752 miles of roads linking all towns and villages.

The Rain Forest Aerial Trams and Canopy is a must try in St. Lucia. No wonder this popular travel destination was recommended by a good friend who spent his birthday in this place. It was so exciting and the view was amazing. The entire experience was really fun! I can’t wait to explore once more the thrill this place has to offer. The Jazz Festival is something to look forward to if you’re a big Jazz fanatic.

Magnificent beaches and banana plantations are just few of the highlights of St. Lucia. The market on a Saturday Morning is jam-packed with tourists and appetizing produce from this lovely town. I was able to purchase a handicraft, a native bag, and it definitely embodies the fascinating culture of the natives. I think the potteries also being sold in here would make a dainty wedding souvenir!

One of the attractions I really enjoyed during our stay is the Diamond Mineral Baths found in the Diamond Botanical Gardens. I even took tons of pictures waiting for the waterfall to change its color from yellow to black.  I was hoping we could travel to the secret sandy coves but unfortunately, we ran out of time. There’s definitely a part two of our trip to St. Lucia and I hope it’s tomorrow already!

St. Lucia is where you'll want to be if you live up north like I do. It's a beautiful place to take that much needed winter vacation. Be sure to check out Pigeon Island National Park as well as Zion Lion Farm. It's definitely the place to be for anyone who loves to get away from the computer and television and enjoy some outdoor activities.
