Things to do in Santa Fe
OVERVIEW
Things to do in Santa Fe
Santa Fe, New Mexico is the United States’ oldest state capital. Situated on a plateau at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the foothills of the Rockies, the crisp, clear air and bright, sunny weather could not be more welcoming. At an elevation of 7,000 feet, the city is surrounded by remnants of a 2,000-year-old Pueblo civilization. Santa Fe is filled with constant reminders of centuries of Spanish and Mexican rule. The Santa Fe River runs west, parallel to Alameda, the town’s placid central Plaza. Alameda has been the site of bullfights, public floggings, gunfights, battles, political rallies, promenades and public markets over the years. The adjacent maze of narrow streets and alleyways features delightful shops, unique restaurants and flowered courtyards along with eye-catching galleries at every turn, a true delight for pedestrians.
Today, Santa Fe is recognized as one of the most intriguing urban environments in the nation, due largely to the city’s preservation of historic buildings which highlights the city’s distinctive Spanish-Pueblo style of architecture. Also preserved is the city’s rich cultural heritage which helps make Santa Fe one of the country’s most diverse and fascinating places to visit.
