OVERVIEW

Things to do in the Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya is a paradise for group travel programs seeking the infinite beauty of the Caribbean Sea. Located on the eastern coast of Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula just 20 miles south of Cancun International Airport, Riviera Maya offers a laid-back Mexican vacation experience. The Riviera Maya meanders 75 miles from Puerto Morelos to the ancient Mayan town of Tulum. Some popular locales along this stretch are Playa del Carmen, Punta Maroma and Puerto Morelos. The unspoiled beaches are known and treasured by locals, but many remain virtually undiscovered. The serene strands of beach will make even the most seasoned travelers feel as if they are on their own deserted island. Resorts and smaller boutique hotels feature an architectural style in keeping with the area’s cultural heritage, displaying an authentic Mexican atmosphere.

An abundance of activities await travelers visiting the Riviera Maya. Adventure sports, golf, tennis, jungle tours on foot or horseback and water sports are available. Scuba diving on the Great Maya Reef, the second-largest reef in the world, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for scuba enthusiasts. Cavern diving in the region’s underground rivers is a spectacular activity. Day trips to the Mayan ruins or basking on the sparsely populated beaches where the water is warm, clear and blue and enjoying a frosty cold beverage at a cozy little beach are great ways to take in the warm tropical atmosphere.

Nights on Riviera Maya can be peaceful, quiet, romantic evenings or wild and exciting nights on the town. Themed parties with live entertainment and disco bars where travelers can dance the night away can be found in this paradise. Options range from bars with lounge music, soft music, classical jazz or Mexican music.

While vacationing at the Grand Velas Rivera Maya with the family this month, my husband and I were able to introduce our children to the Grand Velas’s version of Snuba®. What is Snuba®?  It’s a unique, shallow water diving system, bridging the gap between snorkeling and scuba diving.

5 Reasons to Love Grand Velas Riviera Maya
by Rachel on Oct 04, 2010
File under: Riviera Maya, Mexico

I never wanted to go to Mexico. I am always excited to travel, but Mexico was never high on my list of places I wanted to go. I had a vision of cheesy all-inclusive hotels filled with honeymooners, drunken spring breakers wearing Senor Frog’s T-shirts and some unsavory images of being kidnapped.  Luckily for me, the Grand Velas Riviera Maya completely changed my mind.

Mayan Ruins at Tulum
by Rachel on Sep 27, 2010
File under: Riviera Maya, Mexico

On a recent trip to the Riviera Maya I pried myself away from the Grand Velas Resort long enough to do a little site-seeing in Tulum. The Mayan Ruins in Tulum are the only ruins in Mexico perched on beachside cliffs. Although I went on a rainy day, the scenery was beautiful. If you are brave enough you can take a dip in the ocean so bring a suit. I also would also recommend getting a guide, as the history is interesting, and in the details of the structures. Most importantly, go early.
