Spa Etiquette: A Quick Guide

If you are among the lucky and received a spa gift certificate for Valentine’s Day, here are a few spa tips that I have picked up from my journeys (and working with groups). You certainly don’t want to miss a minute of the spa experience!

Spa 101

  • Book your spa appointment well in advance. Also try to pick on-off peak time, so the spa is less crowded, and you can really relax. Think ahead when booking: Avoid strenuous activities right after the spa, and give yourself time to shower before heading to lunch or dinner.
  • Don’t rush it! Arrive at least 30 minutes in advance. Many spas have plunge pools, saunas and steam rooms, and other relaxing spaces that you can enjoy before your appointment. Plus, if you are late, your appointment may be cut short.
  • State your preferences. If you prefer a male or female therapist, let the spa know at the time of booking. Once you arrive, make sure to state your preferences, and let your therapist know any special requests you may have. If the spa is playing music that isn’t your taste, or you are freezing cold, let they therapist know; after all, it’s all about you!
  • Be cognizant of others. The spa is somewhere people go to escape, so keep your voice low, and leave your cell phone in your locker.
  • Drink up! Drink water – not booze, before your appointment, especially if you are planning to use the sauna or steam room. Try not to eat too much before your appointment, and give yourself some time to digest if you do.
  • What to wear. As @GoApril said, “I do not want to see you walking through Aria in Vegas in your bathrobe and slippers!” You will be issued those once you arrive. You should, however, leave valuables and jewelry in your sleeping room (or locker if you are at a day spa). Once you arrive at your appointment, wear what you are comfortable in, but remember that therapists are professionals, and the more you wear to a massage or other treatment, the more they have to work around.
  • Tipping. It is recommended that you tip 10-20% for each treatment. Make sure to read the fine print though, gratuities are sometimes included.
