Volunteer Match Made in Heaven

Rachel and I spent our Sunday evening helping the Humane Society of Dayton with their annual fundraiser – Cat Walk at the A-Cat-Emy Awards 2010! Instead of simply writing humane society checks, we decided to volunteer – and had a whole lot of fun in the process.

The Humane Society invites local salons to take part in the “Hair Ball” runway show to see which salon will be crowned “Best in Class.” It was a crazy evening with over 800 tickets sold, 100 volunteers and not a lot of direction around all of the moving parts of this event. However, this was a perfect storm for Rachel and I as we kicked into Travel Director mode and made things happen.

Althea Harper, the fashion designer of Project Runway, was the Celebrity Guest and I was assigned as her “handler,” working with her models and also functioning as her press liaison. This was actually my second time meeting her. My first was just prior to the announcement of the winner of her Project Runway season (she was the runner up). This time around, though, it is just before her first Fashion Week in New York where she will be showcasing her latest designer fashion line. If you don’t know already – I am a fashion buff.

Needless to say she was stressed, but her clothes were amazing and the crowd loved her show (oh how I love the designer apparel – sigh…). It was awesome to see a young up-and-coming person – on the verge of making a huge splash in the fashion world – taking time out of her stressful, crazy schedule to give back to her community!

Anyway, once we worked through the logistics of show, got the fashion show models dressed and looking beautiful, I got to check in on Rachel, who was a Salon liaison for Salon Gloss. What a fun role Rachel had – she got to watch the salon take the models’ appearances to the next level (talk about getting some style tips). She was also responsible for ensuring the models were warmed up for the show, dressed and in order so there was no gap in flow of the show.

The event was a huge success and raised a lot of money for the Humane Society.
