I recently spent some time at the Westin Kierland Hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was my first time working with the hotel property, and I am here to tell you – I hope to have a reason to return. From the corporate meeting space to the luxury spa to the people, I think that the Kierland Resort and Spa is a top-notch property for group travel (and individuals for that matter).
Here are just a few reasons why:
1. Friendly Staff – Above all, I truly believe that it is the people you work with who make the difference. At the Westin, you could tell they just love where they work, and work as a cohesive team.
2. Large Meeting Space – As with most large ballroom spaces, the area could expand to one large function room or be divided into several smaller rooms. And let me tell you that, when the phrase “turn it up” is used, the Westin Kierland speakers can more than accommodate.
3. Great Business Meeting Rooms – Equipped with tall ceilings and open spaces, for those of you who are planning a meeting, know that their space is great for larger groups.
Note though:
• Outdoor space was limited and challenging; be prepared to have “all hands on deck” to direct, answer questions and make sure the bar is full.
• The outdoor area – Marshall’s Outpost was great, because it was a large space. However, additional lighting will probably be needed, as well as heat lamps in the fall and winter. Be sure to book a good sound system if music is being played. I also recommend that you have the sidewalk lit from the bonfire to the outdoor area.
4. Great Location – The Westin Kierland Resort is a newer property and meets its stated expectations: “in the heart of Scottsdale.” For leisure time, your group has a lot of great shops and restaurants within walking distance. Note: it’s about 20 miles and a $60 cab ride from the airport.
5. Clean – The hotel is very well-manicured – the grounds, the marble floors, rooms, etc.
6. Green Hotel Elements – This is great: the hotel offers money-saving opportunities for the guests to “think green.” For example, if a guest places the doorknob notice outside before 2:00 AM indicating the room will not need to be refreshed, the guest automatically receives a $5 off coupon, to be used anywhere in the hotel. Another feature: cold water jugs and cups in the larger meeting rooms, to cut down on bottled water usage. The Agave Spa uses organic spa products, and recycles glass, paper and plastic products used in the spa and fitness center.
7. Nice Restaurants – There are fun, trendy restaurants right across the street from the Westin in the Kierland Commons. There are several unique independent American and European cuisine restaurants of various sizes and price ranges. As well as chain restaurants such as: Cheesecake Factory, Morton’s, P.F. Chang’s, Starbucks and Cold Stone. I loved the fact that the group could walk to the restaurants and walk home – saves money on transportation costs.
8. Spa Facilities – The people were a pleasure to work with and very accommodating. There are 21 treatment rooms at your disposal and cabanas outside for poolside treatments. Also – in addition to the great service, most of the products are organic.
9. A Water Park of a Pool – When I first saw the outdoor pool area, I wasn’t expecting the 900-foot lazy river or the 110 foot-long water slide, or the fountains in the kid’s area. And, if lying out and relaxing is more your speed, the adult pool near the spa is sure to be your best bet. Lap lanes and a Jacuzzi can be found in this area as well.
10. Spacious Rooms – A comfortable size room with great bedding and bathroom amenities. The Westin Signature Heavenly Bed is sure to allow a comfortable night’s sleep.
Thus concludes my review. The Westin Kierland does have the makings of a great group hotel.
