V3.19 September, 2011 America the Beautiful Oh beautiful for spacious skies... The words to "America the Beautiful" were written in 1893 by Katharine Lee Bates, an English professor from Wellesley College who had no idea her poem would one day become a famous song. The lyrics were inspired by the beauty she saw from the top of Pikes Peak, rising 14,110 feet above Colorado Springs. Visitors today can share Katharine's vision via the world's highest toll road, or by way of the historic Cog Railway.
