OVERVIEW

Things to do in Lyon France

Lyon, France enjoys its position as a major regional, national and European hub in the center of the Rhone valley. The thriving city of Lyon is in the heart of Europe, midway between London and Milan, Brussels and Marseille, and Munich and Madrid. To the north of Lyon, the Beaujolais spreads across 54,000 acres of hills and vineyards, offering Lyon’s “bouchons” and restaurants products from 10 of the finest Beaujolais vineyards (Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, Côte de Brouilly, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgan, Moulin à Vent, Régnié and Saint Amour) good enough to wet any gourmet’s palate.

From the Roman city of Lugdunum to the city of today, two millenniums have left their mark in terms of an outstanding architectural heritage at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers: Fourvière, with its basilica and Gallo-Roman ruins; the Renaissance district of Old Lyon, which is centered around Saint Jean Cathedral; and the presqu'île (peninsula between the two rivers), which was shaped by the great classical and imperial era, along with the slopes of the Croix-Rousse, where the silk industry thrived.

Lyon has something for everyone. Guests may take a walk through the city’s contrasting quarters, go for a stroll in the parks, take a tasty break in one of the typical cafes or gastronomic restaurants, view the city from the flowing waters – there is no shortage of things to do and see.

What makes Lyon unique?
Lyon is a best kept secret of France. It is located geographically and strategically in central France. It is a gateway to the Alps and popular ski destinations and less than 2 hours ride from Paris by TGV (high speed train). Lyon is also the world capital gastronomy. With Beaujolais nearby, Burgundy to the North and Cote du Rhone to the South, no wonder Lyon has the largest number of Michelin restaurants! Lyon is not only the second largest city in France, but old Lyon is the second largest renaissance area in Europe after Venice.
