OVERVIEW

Things to do in London

Cosmopolitan but still quintessentially British, the city of London is a bustling mix of history, culture, art and architecture that weaves the story of the English into a colorful tapestry. Ancient buildings blended with modern skyscrapers set the stage as the world’s best shopping, chic restaurants and traditional pubs await.

Spreading over more than 618 square miles from its center on the Thames River, London is the largest city in Europe. An estimated seven to twelve million people call London home and over 20 million people a year visit the city. As the nation’s financial and publishing center, this capital city is grand, charming and beautiful with outstanding museums, monuments, art galleries, breathtaking palaces, quaint squares, peaceful green parks, shopping, theater and exciting nightlife. Ever evolving, London is exhilarating and irresistible.

The history of the English greets all at every turn – stand on Waterloo Bridge at sunset and to the east St. Paul’s Cathedral glows golden. To the west, the ramparts of Westminster, home to the Mother of Parliaments and Big Ben. Below flows the swift, dark Thames River, following the same course it flowed past the first Roman settlement here nearly 2,000 years ago.

London has something that will delight every visitor – whether their wish is to enjoy its nightlife, explore its history, shop ‘til they drop or walk the bustling streets and crooked lanes. London will recharge their spirit and warm their soul.

“Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea “ –  that chant will forever play in my head.  It’s pretty catchy and it’s all I heard as I attended my first European Football (or soccer depending where you are) game.  Let me start by saying it was AWESOME!

New Year's Eve is the biggest party night of the year in the UK, and although there's lots of reasons for celebrating the New Year - out with the old  and in with the new, a fresh start or warding off bad spirits - it's also one of the most widely celebrated occasions in the world.

The natural beauty that surrounds London is just astounding and no matter where you go, everywhere you look, the place offers various sceneries that never fail to put any tourist in awe.  Some of the best places and not to mention the most popular places to check in London are the mystical Stonehenge, fascinating Lake District National Park and the picturesque Lizard peninsula. These just seem to bring you closer to nature.  You shouldn’t fail to visit other top tourist attractions like the National History Museum, Madam Tussaud’s Wax Museum and the British Museum, that is if you are an art lover like I am, but am sure even if you are not an art enthusiast, you will also learn to love it gazing at what’s inside these museums.

I lived in London for a year and it is one of my favorite cities in the world!  London is a walking city and it is the best way to see many of the sites!  I also recommend the double decker bus tour where you can get on and off throughout the day!  Sit up top and it is so much fun!  Make sure you get to Highgate Cemetery in Highgate Village and check out the village of Hampstead.  You will find the home of John Keats and in another area - the last home of Sigmund Freud.  My two favorite museums are the V&A and the British Museum.  Lots of walking but it is a pedestrian friendly city!  Cheers!
