Culinary Treats from Around the World

In an effort to not gain the typical winter pounds, I have been trying to eat healthier foods in the New Year. All of the oatmeal and vegetable dishes of late have gotten me thinking about the more indulgent foods I have enjoyed over the years. Here are my top five favorites from around the globe.

  1. Gnocchi in Florence, only rivaled by a good Pizza Margherita. I think the best I had was at Zsa Zsa’s located near Piazza Signoria, but that could be the good friends and wine talking.
  2. Pineapple in Costa Rica, or any other tropical fruit for that matter! It was so fresh, and I was lucky enough to eat it on a large porch with a great jungle view with the ocean peeking out between the trees. I also couldn’t get enough of the Four Season’s guacamole!
  3. Carmancita’s cooking in El Salvador. She truly could do no wrong. Fresh-squeezed juice in the mornings and savory traditional delights like yucca and empanadas, vegetarian style, for lunch and dinner. These dishes are pretty exclusive; she lives in a remote village!
  4. My dad’s ceviche. Honestly, this could be my favorite. Bi-yearly I give up my strict no-seafood vow to enjoy his spicy shrimp dish. It doesn’t get any better, except maybe for my mom’s layered cheesecake.
  5. Paella in Barcelona. Yum. Anything by the ocean is better, but the Spanish really get it right with this spicy, flavorful dish.

What are your favorite indulgences from around the world?
