Why City Fun Facts
  • Lots of relaxation
  • Very secluded; not overbuilt.
  • The Big Island is not the typical "Hawaii." You can really get out and explore on your own!
  • Most attractions are basically located along the "Hawaii Belt" routes (Routes 11, 19 and 190).
  • Diverse eco-climates - 11 total
  • Landscape includes beach and volcano mountains: Mauna Kea, Hualālai and Mauna Loa (an active volcano).
  • Terrain includes black lava fields that are reminiscent of a moonscape.
  • The Big Island does not offer shopping malls, but retail boutiques and shopping adventures are abundant. Shopping centers tend to be gathering spots for the locals with lei making, ukulele lessons or local entertainment. A few retailers do recognize “blue laws” (laws which prohibit secular activities on Sunday) and are closed on Sundays.
  • Best buys are on traditional Hawaiian souvenirs and executive Hawaiian shirts.
  • Merrie Monarch Festival, honoring the Hawaiian hula, is celebrated every Easter week in Hilo. Big Island locals have a great respect for history and nature. The mana (spiritual power) is strong at places like Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park and Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site.
  • It is common practice for visitors to arrange stones along the road side into shapes and messages. Keep in mind that “critters” can live under the stones, so proceed with care.
  • Two cocktails intrinsic to Hawaii are the Blue Hawaii and the Mai-Tai.
  • Expect long transfers from most of the high-end resorts to great dining spots.

City Overview

Welcome to the Orchid Island! The Big Island of Hawaii is the largest of the six-island chain that makes up the Hawaiian Islands and continues to grow daily, with the addition of lava flow that hardens as it hits the sea and forms black sand beaches. Formed by volcanoes a half-million years ago, the Big Island is the youngest and has the most diverse terrain of all the Hawaiian Islands.

This island of amazing contrasts has topography that ranges from lush rainforests and monolithic cliffs to beaches of many colors and active volcanoes. Helicopter tours carry sightseers over the two-mile lava lake known as Kupaianaha, an 800-foot cylinder cone, to view flowing lava and steam clouds that rise from the ocean as the hot lava meets the sea. Flying over majestic Mauna Kea, visitors see snowcapped peaks from December to May with panoramic views of the lush valleys and sun-drenched beaches below. Measured from its base 32,000 feet beneath the ocean’s surface, to its 13,796-foot peak, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world.

The Big Island’s southern tip extends farther south than any other state in the United States and to the southeast far below the ocean’s surface, Lohi, a sea mountain bubbling lava, is slowly building yet another island that will emerge in about 10,000 years. Far above the sea, at Keck Observatory on the summit of Mauna Kea, the world’s most powerful telescope searches the heavens.

With its clear waters, blue skies and varied terrain (as tamed or as wild as it comes), wherever guests go on Hawaii’s Big Island, chances are they will enjoy a new experience – e komo mai (welcome); explore to the heart’s content!

Top 10 Reasons to Visit Mauna Lani Bay Hotel
by Sara Beth on May 15, 2010
File under: Big Island, Hawaii

Located about 45 minutes north of the Kona International Airport in Keahole, The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel was a great group hotel! It’s a quick, easy drive from the airport on the same road as the Iron Man competition takes place. The road is not quite what you would expect of Hawaii; it’s all black lava rock but scattered with white coral. A lot of people write messages or logos with the coral; a fun way to literally leave your mark in Hawaii.
