“staycation”: pretend to be a tourist in your own area

After weeks of traveling all across the U.S. and parts of the Caribbean, I was “grounded” for the month of August – meaning I would be in my hometown of Dayton, Ohio, for longer than two weeks. What was I going to do? But then I did a little research on what Dayton has to offer, and decided to take my own “staycation” the past two weekends. (Word and definition from twitter follower @thewideangle.)

Here are some of my favorite activities:

  1. Check out local bars and restaurants; many have fabulous outdoor patios which can be really refreshing during the evening hours. A few of my favorites are in the Oregon District in downtown Dayton. I really enjoy all the local bands rocking out to their originals.
  2. Getting brunch at the market. Second Street Market in downtown is one of my favorites!
  3. Go to a baseball game – or two, or three! Fortunately, in the Dayton and Cincinnati area, we have several teams to root for.
  4. Visit your county fair. Last weekend I went to the Darke County Fair and had a great time. I hadn’t been to a fair in several years, and I was not disappointed! I loved seeing everyone support their locally grown and owned products.
  5. Head to the closest amusement park. Now I’m not usually a fan of the big crowds and long lines, but once every few years with a few of my best buds really isn’t so bad.
  6. Support your local community, and get out and volunteer!

How would you spend your two week “staycation”?

We visited Dayton a couple of years ago to visit a friend who'd relocated, and we really liked it! Loved the beautiful architecture, the Oregon District (like you mention) and I know it may sound odd, but, the cemetary!

The cemetary is beautiful! There is a 5k race through there every fall and it's a big hit!

Staycations are such a low stress way to have a vacation but not incurr all the stress...especially if you have more than one youngster in tow. And usually when I have a Staycation, I end up learning something about my own town that i did not know.
